Spring 2018 Enrichment Classes

Registration, class selection, and payment for enrichments will all be handled online. This page has all the details of classes that will be offered during the spring 2018 session of enrichments. Use this page to plan your enrichment schedule. Registration is open now through Wednesday, March 21.

Important Dates for the Spring 2018 Session

  • Friday, March 9 – Online registration begins for all classes at 6 a.m.
  • Wednesday, March 21 – Registration ends for all classes; no registrations received after this date will be accepted.
  • Tuesday, March 27 – Classes begin.
  • Tuesday, April 3 – Last day to make any changes to an existing registration (i.e. switching or cancelling classes). After this date all registrations are final.
  • Friday, May 25 – Last day of classes.
  • May 29-June 4 – All make-up classes will be held.

Classes that meet on Mondays and Wednesdays have 8 scheduled sessions; Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday* classes all have 9 scheduled sessions.

*Please note: Excite Soccer and Yoga, which take place in the Gym on Fridays, will not have class on April 20 and May 4. Excite Soccer and Yoga have only 7 scheduled sessions.

Notes and Policies

  • All classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Burgundy will NOT be able to hold a spot in any class if payment has not been made.
  • Burgundy reserves the right to cancel any program that does not have sufficient registration. All efforts will be made to find an alternate class in this case, or a refund will be issued.
  • Any individual classes that need to be cancelled during the enrichment session will be made up during the make-up week at the availability of the instructor and class space.
Work Smarter Study Hall

You must register for each day individually. You can register for one, two, or all three days. Your student can only attend if they are registered for that day (no drop-ins).

The purpose of Work Smarter is to offer students a supervised and supportive environment for after school homework time, quiet reading, study skills, one-to-one help and an opportunity for students to interact with a variety of teachers and administrators.

Goals: To encourage students to complete their homework, to offer help to students in all areas of study, to teach and reinforce study skill and organizational habits, to offer library resources to all participants, to give students individual and small group time for academic purposes, to develop relationships with families of participants, and to support the Extended Day Program for older students who need study space.

Outcomes: Higher level of homework completion, organized binders, expanded use of the library collection, teamwork experiences for students in a variety of grade levels, access to tables, computers, calculators and other homework-related materials, consistent and expanded hours of academic support on campus, and practicing respect for self, others and the community.

All About ART!

Val, Kate, and all Art things GREAT! Join us this spring and tackle a variety of ARTrageous Art forms that are sure to tickle your creative side. We will explore the Fired Arts (pottery painting, fused glass and clay) and mixed media projects (painting and mosaics). The possibilities are endless! Our focus is on Art as a process, not a product. We expect you to put your artistic thumbprint on the various Art movements/techniques that we cover. So, come to class each Monday with your creative hats on tight and be read to take artistic risks! You are going to have the hottest home Art gallery in the neighborhood! All color products/tools used are non-toxic and safe for even the smallest hands. Projects are designed to be engaging for younger and older kids.  

 

Sensational Stories and Cool Creations

Do you love stories? Do you love art? Then this class is for you! Come enjoy time listening to exciting stories read aloud by Barbie and Tracy and then express yourself through art, drama, and games.

Participants will enjoy stories read aloud and then engage in a variety of art projects and drama experiences that are connected to the story. We will explore drawing, painting, sculpture, puppetry, and more. All materials are included.

*Don't worry if you came last session, we will have all new projects!

We offer a weekly yoga program with a different theme every week to develop balance, coordination, flexibility, core strength, concentration, creativity, focus, and FUN! Our yoga program for kids includes the same poses that adults love, but matched to a weekly theme for a fun movement experience. We guide kids through our planned routines, and invite them to add their own creative poses to our themed adventures. Each class incorporates quiet music, balance challenges, and focused breathing to support concentration. We love working with kids and seeing them become excited and proud of what they can do with yoga.

 

Yoga - Junior

JumpBunch Sports!

JumpBunch offers a different sports and fitness activity each week to offer early sports experiences that are positive and exposes them to many sport options. Kids have fun while sharpening physical skills, engaging positively with peers while engaging in sports, building healthy habits, and making physical fitness fun! Each class incorporates upbeat music, equipment for each kid, activity throughout the class, and FUN! Our focus is kids leaving JumpBunch with positive feelings about physical activity. Our sports for this session will include lacrosse, obstacle courses, basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, ping pong, surfing, Frisbee, and balance challenges. Each kid will receive a flying ring for family fun!

 

Fencing for Young Jedi

Class Fee: $240/student

Fencing for Young Jedi classes are conducted in the discipline of épée. Classes focus on the fundamentals of fencing including footwork, handwork, strategy, and the ruled of fencing. These 1-hour classes include group exercises as well as drills in pairs and bouting. Skills are reinforced with age-appropriate games and activities that build conditioning, speed, and endurance while also emphasizing critical thinking and quick decision-making. At the end of the session a tournament will be held at the Nova Fencing Club using electric fencing equipment. Fencing for Young Jedi is appropriate for both beginning and continuing fencers.

 

Dare to Dance!

So you think you can dance? My guess is, yes you can! Come dance with us if you dare! Together we will learn to explore movement through many styles of dance like ballet, afro-jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and modern. Enjoy a safe, positive, and creative space for all children, while building confidence, healthy hearts and bodies, and increasing motivation and focus. Leap, rock, roll, and groove, with fun games and activities that will keep you moving. Our fun exploration will lead us to a fantastic culminating showcase as an opportunity to share what we’ve created during our time together.

 

Silver Knights Chess Club

Learn chess from a Silver Knights Chess coach! We teach more than 3,500 children each week. State and national champions have come from our programs, but most of our students are just looking to have fun! Class time is split between lesson and play. Lessons range from learning the rules to advanced tournament strategies, depending on the participants. Playtime is structured to pair each student against an opponent of similar skill. All grades and skill levels are welcome. Silver Knights will supply all the equipment during chess club. Students will have the opportunity to play in tournaments.

 

Fantastic Beasts Book Club
Thursday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Wands at the ready!  In this enrichment, students will explore the text Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, learning about all sorts of magical creatures. Each student will receive a copy of the text and a wand. Discussions will be balanced with challenges crafts, and trivia. Can students find traces of magical beasts loose on campus? A working knowledge of the Harry Potter universe is recommended to make the most of this magical adventure!

Excite Soccer

Children will be encouraged to develop their mental, physical, and social abilities through creative soccer games and other activities taught by highly experienced staff; all trained to work with younger children. Participants will learn individual skills, teamwork, and most importantly, have fun! Our emphasis is on mastering basic coordination and agility with and without a soccer ball, a well as on providing a confidence-building environment. Children will be grouped by age for appropriate drills and games. Each practice will finish with small-sided scrimmages (i.e. 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4).

 

Tae Kwon Do

The Tae Kwon Do of today is the modern product of martial arts and folk games developed over many centuries in Korea. While there is no doubt that Korea, China, and Japan all had their own indigenous martial arts, it is also quite likely that they shared much of their martial cultures with each other while maintaining the distinct flavor of their own country’s culture.

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art involving kicking, blocking, and striking and has truly transcended the place of its birth and become one of the most popular martial arts in the world. The class will have some fitness, body movement, and martial arts skills incorporated. The children will get to experience real martial arts without the commitment and cost of a traditional school. Experienced students will have the opportunity to practice and develop skills.

Drums Are Fun - Beginners

We study rhythms, beats, and patterns from all over the world. This class will cover techniques on djembe, frame drum, shakers, woodblock, clave, drum set and more! The class performs in a percussion ensemble each class.

Playmaking - Writers and Actors Needed!

For students interested in writing scenes or a whole show, and for students who just want to act! Participants will get to develop their own individual ideas and concepts with guidance for Burgundy drama teacher Roberta Cullen. They can then help act out their work, or let other interested actors present and perform it. Classes will also include some improv activities and theater games to round out the fun!  

*The first session of this class will be held on April 4, and this class will run one week longer, ending May 30.  

 

Introduction to Violin

This class is a beginning violin class for students who are familiar with the instrument, and have some fundamental violin skills. It is meant to be a continuation of the first violin enrichment class, or for students who have taken a few private lessons on the violin. The expectation for this class is that students spend at least 1-2 hours per week developing their violin skills and also listening to music while reading the Story of the Orchestra, with parental assistance. The hope is for music to become a cherished part of parent and children’s shared experience.

Flute Master Class

All level of flutists are welcome – any age, any level. We will work on the basics like tone production and fingering in addition to pieces at your level. In addition to the basics, all students will also play ensemble pieces including duets, trios, and quartets at their playing level (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

Electronic Game Design

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! On your mark, get set, GO! Kids are drawn to the excitement of a race. They hoot and holler in anticipation that the car they chose will cross the finish line first. We will use the Engineering Design Process to create a storyboard that will outline the rules of play and characters for our game based on the basic rules of racing. Then, we will use Clickteam Fusion 2.5® to bring our storyboard to life with programming. At the end of the program, everyone takes home a working Windows-compatible game. 

 

Junior Aerospace Class

The Junior Aerospace Engineering classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of aircraft and spacecraft design. Through open and focused exploration, students explore and construct airplanes, rockets, helicopters, and more.

 

Barnyard Buddies

Barnyard Buddies is the perfect class for younger friends who love animals!  Students will be introduced to daily care, health and well-being, and learn appropriate interactions with different types of animals. Activities include feeding, grooming, light barn chores, and spending time with all of their favorite barnyard friends! Please send students with weather-appropriate clothing and shoes, as most of our time will be spent outside.

 

Barn Club
Wednesday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Class Fee: $140/student

Barn Club is the perfect class for kids who love animals! Students will assist in daily care, learn about animal health and well-being, and practice animal interaction and communication. Activities include feeding, grooming, barn projects, and horsemanship. Please send students with weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes, as most of our time will be spent outside.

 

Digital Photography
Tuesday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Grades: 4th - 8th

Location: Burgundy Computer Lab
Class Fee: $310/student

Students will learn how to use digital cameras and create artistic photographs both indoors and outdoors. They will also be introduced to editing their photographs on the computer. Students will be encouraged to explore creatively with their photography. No experience required. If you want to learn how to use a camera or take better photographs this is a great class for you!
