Mission

At Burgundy, education is a cooperative enterprise in which a community of students, teachers, and families works together to benefit the educational process.

Our Mission Statement

Burgundy Farm Country Day School believes that children learn best in an inclusive, creative, and nurturing environment that engages the whole child. Burgundy’s innovative, hands-on approach to education cultivates independent thinking, promotes academic excellence, instills respect for diversity, and teaches responsibility for self, for others, and for the natural world.

Adopted by the Board of Trustees on February 2, 2007.

Our Philosophy of Education

Guided by the belief that we are inherently connected to all people and the world around us, we nurture in our students a joy of learning, an appreciation for human diversity, and, on a campus in which every classroom opens to the outdoors, a sense of stewardship for the environment.

Our philosophy is rooted in the concepts of progressive education, which honors the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of children, allowing growth to unfold at each child’s own pace. Through work, exploration, and play, we seek to educate the whole child, not just the intellect. We know from experience and cognitive science that children learn best not only by doing, but also by thinking about what they are doing. Our approach is to stimulate students’ questions and to set the stage for learning with materials, situations, and ideas from which the students can construct their own understanding.

At Burgundy, we treat children with respect. We recognize that each child is different, and we strive to make each one feel that this difference is an asset. Students learn that communities are strengthened by diversity, and that appreciating differences is vital to creating a just, peaceful world. Teachers provide opportunities for students to learn about, to appreciate, and to do things for others; students develop problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills that help them contribute to their communities.

Our integrated curriculum emphasizes the interdependence of ideas, often weaving a single theme through social studies, mathematics, science, reading, writing, and fine and performing arts in order to draw out student creativity and build a deeper understanding of the subject. As Burgundy teachers, our job is to help students find their own paths to understanding, and that often means providing several different learning experiences and means of assessment within one class.

We have high expectations for our students because we regard them highly. Teachers encourage intellectual autonomy, personal responsibility, and artistic creativity, so that Burgundy students leave the school prepared to face the challenges ahead. Having formed strong and secure individual identities within their community, Burgundy students graduate knowing who they are, how to learn, and how to advocate for themselves. Equipped with a strong academic foundation and a deep understanding of their responsibility to their local and global communities, Burgundy students successfully navigate and influence their world.

Spring Sports Recap from Jerad

Our spring teams have become more competitive; the teamwork throughout the school day and during games is beautiful to see, and the leadership from our 8th graders has been phenomenal.
